“The best experience I’ve had in my high school life!”  – Savannah

A SEMESTER EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER

Since 1995, students from public, private, and home schools across the country have come to our 182-acre campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains to spend a challenging academic semester away. Our place-based curriculum is integrated with wilderness experiences (backpacking, whitewater paddling, and rock climbing), environmental education, and creative arts (including traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, wood carving, and quilting).

At OA, your honors-level classes will be small and personalized, your teachers will also be blacksmiths and rock-climbing experts, and your new classmates will become lifelong friends.

Life-Changing Adventures

I can’t imagine the me before OA. I’m never going to be able to imagine what I would be like if I hadn’t had this experience: it was amazing.

What School Should Be

OA is what school should be. Everyone at OA chooses to go there, so there is a positive energy around classes and learning that is not found at regular schools.

Find Yourself

OA is a place where you are given space to find yourself within the structure of a school. You also develop community and interpersonal skills, all while having an awesome time in the beautiful Pisgah Forest.

Enjoy Learning

OA is an amazing place where you can truly enjoy learning. I found that OA has motivated me to put a lot more effort into school, work, and my hobbies. I think OA has changed the way that I think about the world and has very positively affected my mindset, and the way I view myself.

I think OA is a great opportunity to learn in a way normal schools won't teach you, to be pushed out of your comfort zone, and  to grow as a person. You go through many amazing experiences that few other people have, and you learn more from them about life choices and yourself than you could possibly think.

OA is a place of discovery. You not only have the opportunity to learn about yourself and the world around you, but you are encouraged and supported in your curiosity. It's a place of community and communication, of change and growth, of finding yourself and finding a family in the people around you.
